Hardsurface Tutorial Collection — VOL 03 - Scifi Helmet
Hardsurface Tutorial Collection VOL 03 takes a sci-fi helmet from 2D concept to finished hard-surface mesh in 270 unnarrated minutes of 3ds Max.
Six hours in ZBrush, and the only volume of the Sculpture Series that leaves the head behind. Volume five sculpts a ninja rabbit as a complete character — the body built from scratch, then the cloth of the costume over it, then the detail that ties the two together.
Scale is what makes this one different. A bust can be carried by a good face; a full figure cannot, and 360 minutes is the honest amount of time it takes to get proportion, pose and silhouette right before any surface work begins. If the earlier volumes taught you to sculpt a head, this is where the same habits get tested against a whole body and a set of clothes that has to hang off it convincingly.
Six hours is a project rather than an evening, and it is best used as one: block out the figure with the recording, stop, come back for the cloth, come back again for detail. Stylised full-body characters are also among the most useful things to have in a junior portfolio, because they demonstrate proportion and costume together rather than one facial study repeated in different hairstyles. The sculpt follows a reference rather than being improvised, so work with your own reference visible.
Basic ZBrush knowledge: navigating the software and using its primary functions. The completed character and its working files stay out of the download; the six hours of process are the product.
Each tutorial follows one asset from start to finish in real time. Every decision is explained as it is made, so you can see not just what was done but why that approach was chosen over the alternatives.
