Hardsurface Tutorial Collection — VOL 03 - Scifi Helmet
Hardsurface Tutorial Collection VOL 03 takes a sci-fi helmet from 2D concept to finished hard-surface mesh in 270 unnarrated minutes of 3ds Max.
The ZBrush Sculpture Series opens on a witch: seventy-five minutes from an empty scene to a finished character, with the face and the clothing both taken to a level worth putting in a portfolio. It is the shortest volume in the series, which makes it the one to begin with if ZBrush is open in front of you and the question is what order to do things in.
An aged face is a good first sculpt because it is forgiving in the places beginners struggle and demanding in the places they should be. The underlying structure has to be right, but the surface wants character rather than perfection, and the costume gives an early lesson in how cloth sits over a form instead of being wrapped around it.
Because the sculpt runs to just over an hour it works as a single sitting, which is unusual and useful: a whole character can be watched into existence in one evening and repeated from memory the next, which is where the learning actually happens. The tutorial is worked against a reference rather than invented at the screen, so the sensible way to follow it is with your own reference image open beside the video.
The final model and the project files are not part of this download. Prerequisite knowledge is basic ZBrush: navigating the viewport and using its primary functions. Everything specific to sculpting the character is shown from the first mass onwards.
Each tutorial follows one asset from start to finish in real time. Every decision is explained as it is made, so you can see not just what was done but why that approach was chosen over the alternatives.
